Principal Environmental Engineer - RCRA Program

12 Months (2000 hours S/T and 200 O/T per year)


Environmental Compliance Subject Matter Expert for Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).  Provide leadership for site environmental programs established to ensure compliance with federal and state environmental laws and applicable DOE Orders.  Specific expertise is needed with RCRA permit modifications and permit management, as well as development of regulatory documents to support various RCRA activities.  Waste management experience needed with Hazardous, Mixed, Transuranic and Low Level Waste.  Activities include compliance oversight, and reporting; development and management of facility-based environmental compliance metrics and work performance tools; routine field walkdowns to ensure continued compliance implementation; evaluation of potential impact of regulatory changes on site operations and development of site responses to proposed new regulatory rulemaking; coordination of the development of permit/license applications and their subsequent transmittal to regulatory agencies; negotiation of permit conditions, permit modifications, and enforcement actions, if necessary, with regulatory agencies; and serve as liaison with regulatory personnel during site inspections or audits. Work assignment requires the establishment of strong working relationships with DOE-SR, regulator personnel, and other SRS contractors; open and respective communication channels; strong communication skills (verbal and written); adherence to SRS and SRNS procedures.

Work Hours:
A 40 hour work week is scheduled.  SRS utilizes various work schedules; including 5/8s (8 hours/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), and a 9/80s (9 hours/day, five days on week A and 4 days on week B).  Work week excludes SRNS holidays.  Each work day has a 30-minute lunch.   

Area Security Access:
A security clearance is not initially required; however, candidate must be capable of obtaining an L or Q clearance if required to perform assigned duties.

B.S. in environmental engineering/science or related field with 10-15 years technical work experience or M.S. in environmental engineering/science or related technical field with 8-12 years technical work experience or Ph.D. in environmental engineering/science or related technical field with 5-10 years technical work experience.  

 Experience in environmental permitting with South Carolina and federal environmental agencies is required. 

RCRA experience required. 

Waste management experience required.

Ability to walkdown/inspect field sites required.
