Radioactive Waste Technical Advisor

12 MONTHS (1000 hours S/T and 0 hours O/T per year)

DUTIES: 
Provide evaluation of technical options and, as necessary, provide innovative approaches and solutions for Radioactive/Hazardous Waste Management to meet the DOE-EM’s waste management needs to ensure regulatory compliance in a timely manner. Apply relevant technical experience in the tank waste treatment and immobilization area and in characterization and disposition of secondary waste streams to help solve DOE-EM mission needs. Analyze and provide technical analyses of proposed flowsheets and disposition options to meet the requirements of DOE O 435.1, Radioactive Waste Management, and DOE O 413.3B, Project Management, along with all applicable federal and state requirements. Provide mentoring and transfer of knowledge to less senior professionals.

Document and provide oral presentations to convey pertinent data and waste management strategies to SRNL onsite and offsite customers to include state and federal regulators and DOE. Travel across the DOE complex and to DOE-HQ to represent SRNL as necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:   
Masters Degree in Environmental Sciences or Engineering or Health Sciences

Communications:
Must have demonstrated oral and written communication skills with state and federal regulators and DOE. Demonstrated teamwork skills are essential for participation on cross-discipline and multi-DOE site teams. The ability to lead teams is a preferred skill.

Experience/Skills:     
Candidate should have greater than 20 years experience in radioactive/hazardous waste management and treatment. Experience in DOE tank waste treatment and disposition, as well as familiarity with RCRA and CERCLA requirements, is preferred. Ability to plan, control, follow through, exercise judgment and be flexible in work scope is required.

Work Hours: 
A 40 hour work week is scheduled. SRS utilizes various work schedules; including 5/8s (8 hours/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), and a 9/80s (9 hours/day, five days on week A and 4 days on week B). Work week excludes SRS holidays. Each work day has a 30-minute lunch.

Area Security Access:
A security clearance is not initially required; however, candidate must be capable of obtaining a minimum of an L clearance to perform assigned duties.

Qualifications:

Masters Degree in Environmental Sciences or Engineering or Health Sciences

20 Years Experience in the following:
a) Radioactive/Hazardous waste management and treatment.
b) Demonstrated technical leadership in this area

Candidate must have demonstrated oral and written communication skills with state and federal regulators and DOE.

Candidate must have the ability to plan, control, follow through, exercise judgment and be flexible in work scope.

Candidate must have demonstrated teamwork skills, considered essential for participation on cross-discipline and multi-DOE site teams.

Ability to travel to other DOE sites

Relevant experience in the DOE complex

Experience in DOE tank waste treatment and disposition, as well as familiarity with RCRA and CERCLA requirements, is preferred.

Ability to lead teams is preferred.
