DUTIES:
Provide broad-based technical editing/writing skills in a variety of scientific areas in
support of the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) Environmental Stewardship (ES)
Directorate. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of small, large and/or complex
editing and writing assignments. The successful candidate will coordinate technical editing assignments
within defined project plans and schedules. The successful candidate will make editorial decisions regarding publication guidelines, practices, and procedures that are consistent with SRNL policy. The successful candidate will interact directly with various authors, scientists, engineers, artists, administrative staff and managers. The successful candidate will follow all applicable site procedures including: office, safety and security procedures.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Serving as a Technical Editor, the successful candidate is responsible for providing a variety of document preparation functions for various types of SRNL-generated documents, such as scientific manuscripts, journal publications, internal reports and external reports. Specific functions include:
Comprehensive editing,
Document formatting,
Copyediting,
Proof-reading, and,
Final document production.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS in English, Communications, Journalism, Engineering or Scientific area; or the equivalent combination of education and experience in the area of technical editor/writer/communications.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
Advanced knowledge of technical editing/writing and document production methods and procedures in a wide variety of scientific areas.
Experience using effective editing/writing techniques for a variety of media including comprehensive knowledge of technical language, usage, and style conventions.
Advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards.
Experience with technical editing software such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, and Acrobat.
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and support/coordinate multiple assignments/projects.
Demonstrated ability to produce products and complete assignments within defined deadlines.
Ability to coordinate with various SRNL support organizations such as Document Control, Records Management, and External Review functions.
Experience leading production and technical writing assignments; comprehensive knowledge of multiple electronic and paper-driven production processes and the application of the electronic tools used in technical editing and writing assignments.
WORK HOURS:
A 40-hour work week is scheduled. Work schedule at SRNL is anticipated to be 9/80s (9 hours/day, five days on week A). Work week excludes SRNS holidays. Each work day has a 30-minute lunch. Normal work location for this position will be an office building. This position may require the Technical Editor have the flexibility to work overtime and/or weekends to accomplish assigned tasks.
AREA SECURITY ACCESS:
A DOE security clearance is not required, however, candidate must be capable of obtaining an L or Q clearance if required to perform assigned duties.
